TRANSPORTATION SOLUTIONS

Transportation is the largest source of our greenhouse gas emissions. We need affordable and attractive mass transit options and a big shift to electric vehicles and the charging infrastructure to go with them.  We need to create a more balanced and healthier transportation landscape that accommodates all users and. And driving down total energy use from vehicles means we also need new options for delivery of goods and a new mindset about when to walk, drive, bike or fly.

Transportation Solution One

VEHICLE EFFICIENCY AND ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Clean vehicles reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants that cause smog and acid rain and contribute to adverse health outcomes, particularly in children and the chronically.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are more energy efficient than gasoline-powered cars and cost approximately 50 to 70% less to operate per mile. How clean an EV is depends on three things:  How the electricity is generated, the efficiency of the supply and the efficiency of the vehicle.  Nyack 2030’s initiatives will focus on all of them.

Sierra Club ‘s Electric Vehicle Guide helps you check out cars, calculate how much you’ll save in CO2 and fueling costs, and learn about EV incentives in your area.

An Idea for Nyack 2030 EV Outreach and Events

Plan for demos and test drives with support fom Sustainable Hudson Valley’s Drive Electric Hudson Valley Program . With support from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), it empowers drivers, car dealers and communities with:

  • consumer education through workshops and the media,

  • group purchases and discounts,

  • car dealer training and mentoring,

  • and help for communities with infrastructure planning and municipal procurement.

Zero Emissions Vehicle Charging Stations

How quickly we make the switch to EV depends in part on how soon vehicle range and EV charging infrastructure can reduce “range anxiety.” Building out the infrastructure will be a challenge and a green business opportunity. New York State offers grants for for the purchase and installation of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) or hydrogen fuel cell filling stations for public use.

The Village of Nyack EV charging station is one of 1,100 charging ports throughout New York. It was installed in 2018 with grant funding from NYS DEC’s Municipal Zero-emission Vehicle (ZEV) Rebate and Infrastructure Grant Program..

The charging station is part of the EV Connect network. Electric and plug-in hybrid car owners need to download the free EV Connect app from Apple’s App Store or Google Play to use the station. Charging is free, but visitors will still have to pay to park during regular Nyack municipal parking hours.

COMPLETE STREETS

Complete Streets is a planning approach for making our streets and sidewalks safe and attractive for everyone, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. The Nyacks are working together to address changing needs and older infrastructure while seeking a more balanced and green transportation landscape.

Greater Nyack Bike and Pedestrian Masterplan

$120,000 Study Writes a Roadmap to Encourage Safer and More Convenient Transportation Alternatives

In 2018, Transporation Planning firm Fitzgerald & Halliday developed the Greater Nyack Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan on behalf of the three Nyack river villages and the Nyack School district, with input from residents, businesses, and stakeholder groups. The project, underwritten by the New NY Bridge Community Benefits Fund, created a roadmap for making the streets, sidewalks and crosswalks in the greater Nyack community area friendlier to bicyclists and pedestrians. The Master Plans’ extensive list of recommendations includes design and planning changes like bike lanes, sidewalks, and signage; education projects like a safe routes for seniors initiative; and policy changes like a 25 mile an hour default speed limit. The plan aims to maximize safety, economic development opportunities, and quality of life.

Complete Streets Workshop

What advantages do the Nyacks have when it comes to helping people get around with without having to drive? What are the obstacles?

In September 2019, 30+ elected leaders, land use board members, planners, bike/walk advocates and residents attended a six hour Complete Streets workshop at the Rockland Community College Hospitality and Culinary Arts Center in Nyack. The seminar was hosted by the three Nyack river villages and sponsored by NYSERDA. Taught by transportation planning consultant Dan Suraci, attendees learned how a Complete Streets approach can address everyone's needs (adults, seniors, kids, and people with special needs) and all of our transportation modalities (walking, jogging, driving, cycling, mass transit). The workshop included a walking tour of downtown Nyack, highlight what works well…and what can work better, too.
