We’re working on climate solutions together.
Nyack 2030 is a coalition of community partners working to address the climate crisis locally and forge a path to a resilient and sustainable future.
Our local governments in the Nyacks, and our library, schools, businesses, houses of worship, civic organizations, nonprofits, other groups and individuals are working together to drive down greenhouse emissions. Nyack’s 2030 Climate Action Plan will lay out a path to cut at least 50% from our 2018 emissions by 2030.
This project has been funded in part by The Climate Smart Community Grant Program, Title 15 of the Environmental Protection Fund through the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.”
How can we lower emissions?
ENERGY
Green supply and a lighter load
With all three Nyacks participating in Community Choice Aggregation we’ll take a giant step in the transition from fossil fuels to renewable electricity.in our buildings. Soon all of our streetlights will switch to LEDs, significantly lightening the load by avoiding the use of hundreds of thousands of kwh of electricity annually. We need to reduce the wasted energy from our buildings and to stay ahead of the curve on new technologies and alternative materials for new construction and retrofits. ” Learn about energy solutions.
TRANSPORTATION
Zero emissions, efficient transit, multiple modes.
To drive down emissions from transportation we’ll promote alternatives to getting around in the old twentieth century way. The Nyacks are taking a Complete Streets approach to making our streets and sidewalks safe and appealing for all users—not just cars and trucks. We’ll work to increase carpooling and mass transit ridership and support the switch to zero emission vehicles for local residents and municipal fleets.

MATERIALS
A life-cycle approach
Managing all of the materials in our lives in a sustainable way means developing life-cycle thinking about what we use and what we throw away or recycle. Our goals will focus on improving our local trash and recycling programs, especially addressing food waste. We’ll focus on purchasing carefully, using less, and reusing more.

NATURAL RESOURCES
An ecological approach
Climate change is one among many challenges that natural resources face. Nyack 2030 will take an approach to landscape adaptation and resiliency that’s based on improving air and water quality, expanding and maintaining our village forest, preserving soil health and supportiing native wildlife.

PREPARING AND ADAPTING
Strength and Flexibility
We’ve been seeing the effects of a warming climate for a decade in sea level rise, upland floods, heat and extreme weather. We’ll lay out the ways we can protect our local residents and infrastructure and maintain our quality of life through times of change.
