NYS Climate Smart Communities Program

Members of the Climate Smart Communities ( CSC)program are a network of New York communities engaged in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving climate resilience. The program provides guidance to local governments on best practices for mitigating and adapting to climate change. Its certification program provides local governments enables high-performing communities to achieve recognition for their leadership.

Nyack was awarded bronze certification in the Climate Smart Communities (CSC) program in 2019, and is completing the Nyack 2030 Climate Action Plan with funding from the CSC grant program. The Village will incorporate plans for achieving silver certification in the Climate Action Plan.

South Nyack established a Climate Smart Communities Committee in 2019 and is working towards bronze certification. Upper Nyack’s Green Committee uses the program as a resource and participates in Rockland County Sierra Club’s Climate Smart Sub-Committee.

NYSERDA Clean Energy Communities Program

Local governments in New York State can use the Clean Energy Communities program to implement clean energy actions, save energy costs, create jobs, and improve the environment. The programs provides resources and technical assistance, and rewards leadership for the completion of clean energy projects. Communities that complete four out of the 10 High Impact Actions and meet all other eligibility requirements are:

  • Designated by New York State as a Clean Energy Community

  • Eligible to apply for grants to fund additional clean energy projects

Nyack became a designated Clean Energy Community in 2019 and continues to participate in the program by working to complete additional actions.

ICLEI USA

ICLEI USA supports municipalities in climate action planning. As an member, Nyack has access to the a broad network of communities and to ClearPath , a software platform for completing greenhouse gas inventories, forecasts, climate action plans, and monitoring at the community-wide or government-operations scales.

EPA Green Power Partners

EPA's Green Power Partnership encourages organizations to buy green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with purchased electricity use. The Village of Nyack purchases 100 % Green-e Renewable Energy Credits.

Sustainable Hudson Valley

The non-profit Sustainable Hudson Valley formed as an education and networking organization, and has been an innovator bridging the worlds of best practice in planning and development, and the communities that seek more innovative ways forward. From 2000 – 2009, they educated thousands of citizens and elected leaders through forums, columns, conferences, the news media, public testimonies and the creation of the Sustainable Living Resource Center, now operating independently in Cottekill.

Nyack has worked with Sustainable Hudson Valley on its Solarize Nyack campaign and plans initiatives on other topics, including electric vehicles and refrigerants.
